2007.8.28 2007.9.19 rev proposal ------------------------------------------- AsiaFI Strawman Proposal - Draft - revision proposal ------------------------------------------- A. Long term research (10-20 years) AsiaFI focuses primarily on the long term research(10-20 years) with secondary focus on the middle term research(5-10 years). Issue - A.1 Research Term: some organizations require output sooner than 5-10 years (NTT Lab, ETRI,...). B. Open Research AsiaFI's research activity shall be open. C. CJK vs Asia We start with CJK first, then expand to Asia as soon as we will be ready so that we could move fast to catch up with North America and Europe D. Education for Graduate Students We emphasize on the graduate student education since the Future Internet projects is the long term project with heavy emphasis on research. Remark: See the following AsiaFI Documents: Document 04 Graduate Student Education and Research Document 15 One-week Course - Discussion Memo 1. Symbios : How we get benefit if collaborate together? We agreed that this is important. Issue: 1a. How are we going to accomplish the goal? 2. Loose federation vs tight collaboration We need to have loose federation AND tight collaboration as each country has its own situation. But collaboration should be done in tight fashion so that we can encourage people work hard toward the goal. 3. Testbeds(Backbone) There are four areas on Testbed activity 1) Requirement analysis 1) Design of a testbed 2) Operation of the testbed 3) Usage of the testbed AsiaFI focuses on the user requirement, and usage of the testbed. We have to coordinate some areas on the testbed activities with other organizations including APAN as well as organizations in North America and Europe. Remark: Each country may have different view on GENI. Issues: 3a. Working relationship with regional organizations ( e.g. APAN) and relevant organizations of other continents (e.g. GENI). 3b. We need a good definition of "testbed"; backbone, wireless, sensor networks? 3c. We expect the wireless and sensor network testbeds to be handled by Mobile/Wireless WG. 4. Membership Structure Two categories of membership is being considered: individual and sponsoring organization. Issue: 4a. Sponsoring organizations, e.g. national associations, testbed operators, and others, need to be elaborated including funding. 4b. Primary membership shall be individual (like IRTF). 4c. We may need to consider special membership category for testbed operators since we need their stable participation. 5. Intercontinental Collaboration We agreed that AsiaFI is to be one of the three regional organizations, and to be complementary organizations to others. We should not prevent any activities in Asia-Pacific to collaborate directly with other two regional organizations, however. AsiaFI should help them to collaborate with them. 6. Finance We need to elaborate on finance. We didn't disagree but we didn't agree anything at this moment and need to revisit later. As a strawman proposal, we may suggest at least $50,000/year to be raised initially. 7. Centers of Excellence We agreed to have several "Center of Excellence" in Asia region. A typical center may have 50+ fulltime researchers including professors and Ph.D course students. University professors and graduate students are counted as 0.5 FTE in this context. Significant ratio of the researchers should be invited from other countries. Issues: 7a. We need major funding in each country. We need to get information of the possibility of such programs. 7b. We need a good reference model, e.g. Xerox PARC. 7c. If the position is temporally (like 2-3 years), we may need to care after the term is completed. 7d. Are we ready to accept such researches in the environment including nursing the baby, raise their kids, commute, size of the apartment, ... 8. Research Focus (renamed from "Upstream vs downstream research vs application") While we will going to focus on future technologies in 10-15 years, we will also need to cover more shorter range of activities as well. Issues: 8a. Shall we divide the research activities in vertical way so that we can evaluate the technologies from its motivations (applications) all the way down to the basic technologies. 9. Who is in charge of the network operation? (was "Technology vs Engineering") APAN should get involved to GENI and related activities. Tentatively APAN would be nice to coordinate interconnect of testbed. We agreed to let somebody be in GENI Engineering Conference in Minneapolis, October 9-11, 2007. We also agreed to participate in FIND Workshop in 2007.10/11. Issues: 9a. What are the roles of APAN and other regional organizations in the context of Future Internet activities? What roles APAN needs to perform in context of testbed operation? 9b. Is APAN appropriate body on coordination of overlay networks as well so that researchers are able to concentrate on their activities? 9c. Are researchers capable to implement their ideas at prototype level including debugging, initial part of the operation, measurement for evaluation, etc ? 9d. We need to have activities on good public relations. We are going to have a session in every APAN meeting so that we may able to disclose what we are doing and we may able to encourage active researchers to get involved. This may not only be APAN but including IEEE/ACM conferences and domestic academic society events. 10. Fair Share 11. Initial Activities in 2008 - Working Group (candidates): mobile/wireless architecture/building blocks trust/security service applications - Testbed Committee - Education Committee Primarily for Ph.D students(next generation researchers) - Event Committee Annual conference may be held rotated among CJK so that we may able to invite researchers from other continents. We may also need to accomodate workshops on specific topics additionally. Remark; AsiaFI website www.anf.ne.kr/AsiaFI ( www.AsiaFI.net to be opend in 2007.10)
