Issue List for Assessment and Future Plan of AsiaFI - Revised Draft

0. Are we sastisfied with current AsiaFI activities?

    We have week-long AsiaFI School/workshops/meetings every summer
    and winter with minimal research collaboration.  Are we satisfied with
    the current arrangement?  What need to be done if not?

1. What area for AsiaFI to contribute for global FI community?
         we looked in mobile area initially(2007~), but failed.
         application may be the candidate.
2. How to coordinate/facilitate the research collaboration in Asia?
         AsiaFI(or anybody else) is not successful on Asian collaboration 
         in the last 4 years.
         Only international research collaboration is between USA(GENI, FIND)
         and each of CJK without further collaboration among CJK.
3. How to make AsiaFI School competitive?
         AsiaFI Schools are OK so far, but not too competitive as we want.
         Is there anything we could learn from our counterparts in Europe and USA?
4. Workshops
         Some of AsiaFI workshops are (very) good, especially in architecture area.
         Are we satisfied with the past workshops, or anything to improve?
5. Critical Mass
         AsiaFI community is fragile at best. is there anyway we could make the
         AsiaFI community robust, possibly through good development of the necessary
         critical mass.
6. Application
         Do we need to focus on FI applications in order to validate FI technologies among others?
7. Testbed
         We have Testbed WG with yearly Testbed Workshop, and we are primarily the testbed users,
         rather than the testbed operators(except the wireless testbed where we need to be both
         users and operators at the same time). Is the current arrangement/activity appropriate?
8. (Working) Definition of "FI" and "FI Research"
         we followed NSF's exercise on FI research definition such as the one found in 
         GENI Research Plan in 2006/2007 to solve the fundamental issues/problems of
         the Internet technology such as security, mobility, scalability, manageability,...
         Europe came up with rather different definitions through EIFFLE White Paper among
         others by defining what internet(or network) do we need in future in order to meet
         various anticipated applications.  then, we have been coming up with the new issues
         including green IT, social networking, and cloud computing among others.  Furthermore,
         we are looking into Network Science as NSF changed its FI scope through NetSE, and
         Internet Science as proposed in FP7.  It's time to come up with the revised FI research
         definition at AsiaFI.
9. Non-university groups in Asia
         Europe has very active three groups in FI research: university, industry, and national research
         organization, whereas USA and Asia have only one group; university.
         At AsiaFI, we have a small industry group and no national research organization group.
         How do we mobilize them; separate regional organization, or under AsiaFI?
10. Standardization
         There are standardization effort on FI; ISO/ITU, and IRTF/IETF, but AsiaFI has not 
         participated directly.  Shall we participate the standardization, and how do we participate
         if so?
